When life suddenly turns heavy – in a marriage, at home or at work – many Muslims ask whether black magic (sihr) could be behind it. The Qur’an and Sunnah do not give a fixed checklist of signs, but they do describe certain features very precisely. This page explains what the sources say, what people often describe in consultations, and how to respond with the Qur’an.

Signs described in the sources

1. Division between husband and wife

Surah al-Baqarah 2:102 names one effect explicitly: people learned “that by which they cause separation between a man and his wife.” A sudden, unexplained aversion between spouses is therefore the sign most often linked to sihr in Islamic writing. The same verse adds that they harm no one through it except by Allah’s permission.

2. Confusion about what one has done

ʿAisha reports that after Labid ibn al-Aʿsam worked magic on the Prophet ﷺ, he would think he had done something which he had not done (Sahih al-Bukhari 5763, Sahih Muslim 2189). This is the main textual basis for the sign of confusion in thought and perception.

3. Relief through supplication and the surahs of refuge

In the same report the Prophet ﷺ kept supplicating to Allah until the matter was made clear to him. The commentaries connect the event with al-Falaq and an-Nas, where refuge is sought:

“And from the evil of the blowers in knots” (Qur’an 113:4, Sahih International)

What people often describe

In consultations with Cihat Keskin (Rahmani Hoca), similar experiences come up again and again. They are not proof on their own; they are indications to look at together:

  • a sudden dislike of one’s spouse or one’s own home, with no clear cause;
  • recurring, very similar dreams;
  • strong restlessness when hearing the Qur’an or standing in prayer;
  • plans – marriage, work, a move – that fall apart at the last moment, again and again;
  • a heaviness that grows at certain times of the day;
  • a mood that changes abruptly on entering or leaving the house.

Sihr, the evil eye or jinn?

Similar experiences are also linked to the evil eye and to jinn. The Prophet ﷺ said: “The effect of the evil eye is a fact” (Sahih al-Bukhari 5740). The difference lies in the cause: sihr is a deliberate act by a person; the evil eye comes from admiration or envy; jinn are created beings that can cause harm by Allah’s permission. In a consultation, the first questions are therefore: since when, did it start after a particular event, and how does it change during the day? See Evil eye protection dua and Jinn possession.

How to respond with the Qur’an and Sunnah

Whatever the cause, the response is the same: refuge in Allah.

  • Ayat al-Kursi (2:255) before sleep – a guard from Allah until morning (Sahih al-Bukhari 2311).
  • Surahs 112, 113 and 114 at night, three times, blowing into the hands and wiping over the body (Sahih al-Bukhari 5017).
  • The last two verses of al-Baqarah at night (Sahih al-Bukhari 5009).
  • The verses on the failure of magic, for example:

“And throw what is in your right hand; it will swallow up what they have crafted. What they have crafted is but the trick of a magician, and the magician will not succeed wherever he is.”” (Qur’an 20:69, Sahih International)
