Jinn are part of the unseen world described in the Qur’an, and many Muslims in the UK, the US and Canada grew up hearing about jinn possession – in Turkish cin çarpması or musallat. This page sets out what the Qur’an and authentic hadith say about jinn and their effect on people, the experiences people commonly describe, and the daily verses and duas of protection, each with its reference.

Who are the jinn?

“And He created the jinn from a smokeless flame of fire.” (Qur’an 55:15, Sahih International)

“And I did not create the jinn and mankind except to worship Me.” (Qur’an 51:56, Sahih International)

Jinn are created beings with free will, like humans. Among them are believers and disbelievers; Surah al-Jinn (72) opens with jinn who heard the Qur’an and believed. Iblis, according to 18:50, was one of the jinn.

Can jinn affect a person?

The Qur’an tells us that Satan and his tribe see us from where we do not see them:

“O children of Adam, let not Satan tempt you as he removed your parents from Paradise, stripping them of their clothing to show them their private parts. Indeed, he sees you, he and his tribe, from where you do not see them. Indeed, We have made the devils allies to those who do not believe.” (Qur’an 7:27, Sahih International)

The Prophet ﷺ said that Satan circulates in the human being as blood circulates (Sahih al-Bukhari 7171). Many classical commentators also point to the image in Surah al-Baqarah 2:275, where those who consume interest stand “as one stands who is being beaten by Satan into insanity,” as an indication that Satan’s touch can affect a person. The verses and duas of protection below are the Sunnah’s answer to all of this.

Signs people describe

The Qur’an and Sunnah do not list fixed signs of jinn possession. What people describe in consultations includes:

  • a sense of a presence in the room, especially at night;
  • frightening dreams that repeat, sometimes with animals such as dogs, cats or snakes;
  • strong aversion, yawning or restlessness when the Qur’an is recited or the adhan is heard;
  • sudden changes of mood that do not match the person’s character;
  • a heaviness on the chest on waking.

These are not proof, but they are the starting point for a conversation. Similar experiences are also linked to sihr and the evil eye, so the first questions are always: since when, after what, and at what times? See Signs of black magic and Evil eye protection dua.

Quranic protection from jinn

Ayat al-Kursi before sleep

Whoever recites Ayat al-Kursi (2:255) on going to bed will have a guard from Allah all night, and Satan will not come near him until morning (Sahih al-Bukhari 2311).

The last two verses of al-Baqarah

Whoever recites 2:285–286 at night, they will suffice him (Sahih al-Bukhari 5009).

Surah al-Baqarah in the home

The Prophet ﷺ said that Satan runs away from the house in which Surah al-Baqarah is recited (Sahih Muslim 780).

The three surahs of refuge

Surahs 112–114 each night, blowing into the hands and wiping over the body three times (Sahih al-Bukhari 5017). An-Nas ends with refuge from the whisperer “from among the jinn and mankind” (114:6).

A dua from the Qur’an

“And say, “My Lord, I seek refuge in You from the incitements of the devils,” (Qur’an 23:97, Sahih International) “And I seek refuge in You, my Lord, lest they be present with me.”” (Qur’an 23:98, Sahih International)

Remembrance through the day

Whoever says one hundred times a day, “None has the right to be worshipped but Allah, alone, without partner; to Him belong the dominion and the praise, and He has power over all things,” it is a protection for him from Satan for that day until evening (Sahih al-Bukhari 3293).

Allah’s name at home

When a person mentions Allah on entering his house and at his meal, Satan says to his companions that there is no lodging and no dinner for them there (Sahih Muslim 2018).
