Ruqyah is the recitation of Qur’anic verses, the names of Allah and authentic supplications over a person, seeking protection and healing from Allah alone. It comes straight from the practice of the Prophet ﷺ and his Companions. This page brings together the main verses and duas of ruqyah, each with its surah and verse number or hadith reference, and explains how a ruqyah session is done.

Is ruqyah permitted in Islam?

Yes. When the Companions asked about the incantations they had used before Islam, the Prophet ﷺ said: “Recite to me your incantation; there is no harm in an incantation which does not involve polytheism” (Sahih Muslim 2200, narrated by ʿAwf ibn Malik). From this and similar reports, scholars draw three conditions, summarised in the “Rukye” entry of the TDV Encyclopaedia of Islam: the words come from the Qur’an, the names and attributes of Allah or known supplications; their meaning is clear; and the effect is expected from Allah, not from the reciter or the words themselves.

The Qur’an as healing

“And We send down of the Qur’ān that which is healing and mercy for the believers, but it does not increase the wrongdoers except in loss.” (Qur’an 17:82, Sahih International)

“O mankind, there has come to you instruction from your Lord and healing for what is in the breasts and guidance and mercy for the believers.” (Qur’an 10:57, Sahih International)

The core verses of ruqyah

Al-Fatiha (Surah 1)

Abu Saʿid al-Khudri reports that a Companion recited al-Fatiha over a tribal chief who had been stung by a scorpion, and he recovered. When the Prophet ﷺ heard of it he asked, “How did you know that it is a ruqyah?” (Sahih al-Bukhari 2276).

Ayat al-Kursi (2:255)

The Verse of the Throne. Whoever recites it before sleeping remains under a guard from Allah until morning, and no devil comes near him (Sahih al-Bukhari 2311).

The last two verses of al-Baqarah (2:285–286)

Whoever recites them at night, they will suffice him (Sahih al-Bukhari 5009, Sahih Muslim 807).

Verses on the failure of magic

For sihr, many reciters add 7:117–122, 10:81–82 and 20:69. For example:

“And when they had thrown, Moses said, “What you have brought is [only] magic. Indeed, Allāh will expose its worthlessness. Indeed, Allāh does not amend the work of corrupters.” (Qur’an 10:81, Sahih International)

Al-Ikhlas, al-Falaq and an-Nas (Surahs 112–114)

ʿAisha reports that every night before sleeping the Prophet ﷺ recited these three surahs, blew into his cupped hands and wiped over as much of his body as he could, three times (Sahih al-Bukhari 5017). In his final illness he recited them over himself as well (Sahih al-Bukhari 5735).

Duas of ruqyah from the Sunnah

The Prophet’s dua for the sick

Anas ibn Malik recited the ruqyah of the Prophet ﷺ: “O Allah, Lord of mankind, remove the harm and heal, for You are the Healer. There is no healing except Your healing, a healing that leaves no illness behind” (Sahih al-Bukhari 5742).

For pain in the body

The Prophet ﷺ taught ʿUthman ibn Abi al-ʿAs to place his hand where he felt pain, say “Bismillah” three times, and then seven times: “I seek refuge in Allah and His power from the evil of what I feel and what I fear” (Sahih Muslim 2202).

Refuge in the perfect words of Allah

Whoever stops at a place and says, “I seek refuge in the perfect words of Allah from the evil of what He has created,” nothing will harm him until he leaves that place (Sahih Muslim 2708).

How a ruqyah session works

  1. Make wudu and sit somewhere quiet.
  2. Set your intention: seeking protection and healing from Allah alone.
  3. Recite al-Fatiha, Ayat al-Kursi, 2:285–286 and Surahs 112–114, adding other verses according to the situation.
  4. Blow lightly into your hands and wipe over your body, as described in Sahih al-Bukhari 5017.
  5. Close with the duas of the Sunnah above.

You can recite ruqyah for yourself, for your family, or ask someone else to recite it for you.
