The evil eye – al-ʿayn in Arabic, nazar in Turkish – is confirmed in authentic hadith, and the Sunnah gives clear duas and recitations for protection against it. This page gathers the evil eye protection duas taught by the Prophet ﷺ, the surahs he recited every night, and what to say when you admire something, each with its reference.

The evil eye in the Qur’an and Sunnah

The Prophet ﷺ said: “The effect of the evil eye is a fact” (Sahih al-Bukhari 5740). Ibn ʿAbbas narrates that he added: if anything could precede destiny, it would be the evil eye (Sahih Muslim 2188). In both reports the harm happens only by Allah’s permission, which is why the answer is to turn to Him.

Many commentators connect the following verse to the hostile looks directed at the Prophet ﷺ:

“And indeed, those who disbelieve would almost make you slip with their eyes [i.e., looks] when they hear the message, and they say, “Indeed, he is mad.”” (Qur’an 68:51, Sahih International)

And Surah al-Falaq teaches us to seek refuge:

“And from the evil of an envier when he envies.”” (Qur’an 113:5, Sahih International)

Dua 1: the refuge the Prophet sought for his grandsons

Ibn ʿAbbas reports that the Prophet ﷺ sought refuge for al-Hasan and al-Husain with these words: “I seek refuge in the perfect words of Allah from every devil, every poisonous creature and every evil eye.” He said that Ibrahim used to seek refuge in the same way for Ismaʿil and Ishaq (Sahih al-Bukhari 3371). Parents often say it over their children in the morning and evening.

Dua 2: ruqyah for the evil eye

ʿAisha reports that the Prophet ﷺ ordered ruqyah to be done for the evil eye (Sahih al-Bukhari 5738, Sahih Muslim 2195). The usual recitation is al-Fatiha, Ayat al-Kursi (2:255) and Surahs 112–114, followed by the dua of the Prophet for the sick: “O Allah, Lord of mankind, remove the harm and heal, for You are the Healer; there is no healing except Your healing” (Sahih al-Bukhari 5742). The full method is on the page Ruqyah: verses and duas.

Dua 3: the three protective surahs at night

Every night before sleep, the Prophet ﷺ recited al-Ikhlas, al-Falaq and an-Nas, blew into his hands and wiped over his body, three times (Sahih al-Bukhari 5017). This is the simplest daily routine for protection against the evil eye, magic and every harm.

Dua 4: refuge when you arrive somewhere

“I seek refuge in the perfect words of Allah from the evil of what He has created.” Whoever says this at a place, nothing harms him until he leaves it (Sahih Muslim 2708). It is a good habit when arriving at work, at a gathering or in a new home.

What to say when you admire something

When you see something beautiful – in yourself, your children or someone else – remember that it comes from Allah. The Qur’an gives the words in Surah al-Kahf:

“And why did you, when you entered your garden, not say, ‘What Allāh willed [has occurred]; there is no power except in Allāh’? Although you see me less than you in wealth and children,” (Qur’an 18:39, Sahih International)

Building a simple daily routine

  • Morning: Ayat al-Kursi and the dua of refuge for your children.
  • Arriving somewhere: the dua of Sahih Muslim 2708.
  • Night: Surahs 112–114 three times with blowing and wiping, and the last two verses of al-Baqarah (Sahih al-Bukhari 5009).
  • When admiring: “Ma sha’ Allah, la quwwata illa billah” as in 18:39.

What about the blue eye charm?

The blue glass eye (nazar boncuğu) is a widespread custom, but it is not a practice from the Qur’an or Sunnah. Protection is sought from Allah through the duas above. The Prophet ﷺ approved ruqyah that contains nothing of polytheism (Sahih Muslim 2200); for the wider question of amulets see Taweez: meaning and the Islamic view.
